Mercury-free fillings are made of a strong composite resin. It matches the tooth color. White fillings were placed only on front teeth in the past, but recently a stronger, material has been developed that withstands the chewing pressure of back teeth.

The biggest advantage of white fillings are that white restorations are more natural looking. Many patients actually prefer mercury-free fillings. Also, many patients with sensitivity to heat or cold find that the composite resin does not transfer temperature changes as fast as silver or gold.
